I hope you all had a great week! I had a pretty solid week and can't complain. The weeks just keep going by faster and faster.
Well there is some pretty big news! Our mission will be getting iPads this week! We have a big mission conference in Berlin on Friday were they will teach us how to use them and then how we can use social media such as Facebook in our missionary work. The good news is I won't be getting one! We had interviews on Friday and the first thing president said to me once we sat down was"Elder Bone, you won't be getting an iPad, you know this right?" I am pretty happy that I won't have to deal with trying to adjust do doing everything on the iPad for my last 2-3 weeks. Plus I don't really want an iPad. Now I can come home and get something not made by Apple;) I know in some other missions it is different but here we will not be keeping the iPads. They will belong to the mission and the missionaries will be expected to give them back at the end of their mission, something which, even though I won't receive one, I find kind of ridiculous. I just feel that after two years they are going to see some wear and tear, regardless of how well the missionaries treat them. They will also be outdated after only one let alone two generations of missionaries. Not to mention the fact that some of the missionaries would take care of them better if it was their own money invested into them. Naja, not something I need to worry about.
My interview with President was kind of strange. For most of the missionaries in the mission this will be their last interview with President Kosak. For those of us that go home in the next two transfers we will have our finisher interview with him but for the rest their next interview will be with President Fingerle. My entire interview was pretty much a short version of what I imagine my finisher interview will be. He just talked briefly about what I have learned so far and what my plans are when I get home. I also told him about our family trip and he was super excited about it. He said we have to plan time to stop by and meet him.
I also finalized my last P-Day. I will be going with Elder Larsen to Berlin and then we will be able to do our last three ours of missionary work together walking around in Berlin talking to people:( strange thought...
We will overnight in one of the apartments that last Sunday Night and then Tuesday we are already there to report to the mission office with our luggage and stuff.
So we had a crazy experience this last week. We were in the park again drawing the Plan of Happiness on the sidewalk and then there was a big commotion in the trees. A guy who was riding his bike kind of swerved and turned around so he could look at it and I walked down the path a bit as well to see what was going on. There was some kind of bird, an eagle of a hawk of sorts that had attacked a female duck and had it pinned to the ground. Then a bunch of other ducks came and attacked the predatory bird and the duck got free of the bird. She flew a short distance, right over the mans head, and landed in the river. The man and I went over to look at the duck but just then about three male ducks started attacking her, climbing on to her, biting her neck and flailing her around. We chased the males away and she climbed up onto the shore and just kind of collapsed. You could tell that she was injured and was limping pretty badly. The male ducks kept trying to attack her again but this man and I kept chasing them away. It was so crazy! I was talking with the man and we were both just so confused and angered by the male ducks. Here was this poor female duck, half dead, and the males were, we assume trying to do what animals do in the spring, and basically killing her. I noticed as she was shifting her position that she had a couple of puncture wounds on her belly. We helped her across the path and she climbed into this wooden box thing and we left her hiding there. It was just such a strange situation. I just felt super sad inside because there was nothing I could do. I wanted to take her home with me and nurse her back to health but we obviously couldn't do that:( We had an appointment with Oliver and so we had to leave and so we left her there. All I could do is pray for her, that she would either survive or that she would pass quickly, and yes Elder Bone did pray for this duck.
A couple days later only a few minutes from that spot we were walking through a big open areas with lots of people picnicking on the grass and the kids playing on the playground. As we were walking through there was a guy and a couple other people walking quickly around and the guy was quickly starting to freak out about something. We slowed down and I started to listen and you could tell that one of his kids was missing and someone said they had seen him near the edge of the river. A handful of people had all stood up and were now starting to try find the boy as this father was running around screaming at the top of his lungs the name of his two year old son. We walked up to him and I started to try to calm him down and ask what the son was wearing. He was going into shock and could barely breathe and was almost about to fall over. Then some guy yelled from across the area that they had found him up near the playground. It was amazing to see how instantly, literally instantly his fear vanished and was replaced with pure relief. He was thanking me even though I didn't really do anything. It was cool.
It was just an interesting week. If all goes well this week Oliver will be on baptismal date! Well I think that's all I have time for. I hope that you all have a great week. I love you all! May the Force be with you.
